About us

Sandbach Striders was born back in 2003. Since the early days, membership has grown with a firm ethos of the club being not just about running but social activities as well. The club is affiliated to UK AAA and has its own qualified coaches. Many other special events take place on various nights too.

The club meets on Wednesdays at 18:30 and Sundays at 09:00 at Elworth Cricket Club.

Whilst many members compete in races from 5k to Marathons, the emphasis remains purely on keeping people motivated and having fun. Why not scan through our race reports to see what we’ve been up to? Having read them, you’re sure to see why Sandbach Striders has developed the motto of being

"No Ordinary Running Club!"

Race Report: Malaga Marathon 09/12/2012

Marathons in December tend to be a bit thin on the ground, particularly in the UK, so over the past few years it's been necessary for me to start looking further afield. In recent years I've had winter weekends away in the Canary Islands, Benidorm and Pisa. Combining a winter marathon but in much more clement conditions than the UK could offer. This year I was pleased to see the Malaga Marathon back on, Malaga being a city which is often overlooked by many visitors to Spain in favour of the more traditional beach resorts.

Opinion: Why I love LDWA events.

I thought I'd take a few minutes to tell you about a type of event which I absolutely love and which I know are also popular with many other Striders. The Long Distance Walkers Association organise a series of challenge events which whilst originally were started for the benefit of walkers are also opened up to runners.

Cakes or carb gels? There really can only be one winner.

On  Sunday as I drove to Standon for the start of my 10 mile race, I was extremely pleased with myself because I remembered the way and for a change did not get lost.

There was also a very nice 4x4 in front of me and the driver looked like a runner.

Race Report: Lichfield 10k 09/09/2012

I’d never heard of the Lichfield 10K run until it came up in a search for races in Staffs during the autumn. I was looking for an on-road 10K race, hoping to beat my Super Six time, and have got friends in Lichfield so signed up.

It was a reasonably early start, I left Sandbach at 8.30 with 2 kids in the car looking

A free Saturday means the chance to run another free 5k at a Parkrun somewhere. Whilst I might usually have nipped down the M6 towards Hanley park for the weekly run there, this time I fancied a change. I also fancied adding to my tally of 8 different Parkruns.

We are quite lucky in Cheshire in that although there are no Parkruns currently on our

Pre-Race Report: Chester Marathon 2012

There have been lot of post-race reports posted on the website but nobody yet has written a pre-race report - I thought I’d change that trend & commit myself to a target in the hope that this may provide the additional motivation I often require to make myself run well!

Last year the club had 14 entrants - this year it's just me!
This weekend I am running the 2nd Chester Marathon & my aim is quite simple - to set a PB & also beat the club record currently held by Alan Pearson.  The club record currently stands at 03:13:17 (set at last years Chester Marathon) which means running quicker than 07:22min/mile pace.

I remember hearing talk last July/August at the club about costumes and an ark being
built then a rehearsal run with Mik and Grant in fancy dress (Mr & Mrs Noah).

of the 28th Médoc marathon with eight other Striders all in fancy dress costumes.

Race Report: Marathon du Medoc 08/09/2012 #1

In 2011 my husband, friends from ‘Team Moose’ and a few fellow members of Sandbach Striders disappeared on a long “boys” weekend. Apparently it is customary for these weekends to involve some sporting activities, a bit of sight seeing, a spot of drinking and some dressing up.

This was their first experience of the Marathon du Medoc, it looked (and sounded) a good one. I was curious…

Race Report: St Thomas 7m 16/09/2012

I left my house at 8.45am as I knew that I needed to get to Upper Tean, on the other side of Cheadle for the St Thomas’s 7 mile road race which started at 10.30am. I am glad I left early as my satnav took me to Stone which I drove round twice, then in the direction of Leek before I realised that I was on the wrong road.

This is at the 2 mile mark (which was also part of the Cheadle 4 route)

After stopping several people I finally found my way to Upper Tean. As I turned into

Race Report: Salford Quays 10k 09/09/2012

I entered this race early in the year and had planned to use it to try and improve my 10k time to around 58 minutes, but funny how things never seem to go to plan.  I did the race with my daughter and a friend from work whom I had convinced that the race would be easy.

The race itself was well organised and there was ample car parking on the multi-storey car

On Saturday 8 September I ran the Ipstones 5 mile race. Thankfully I got a lift from Janet and Sue of South Cheshire Harriers as my sense of direction when I get anywhere near the  Leek/Ashborne road leaves a lot to be desired.

Thank god for a bit of flat road!

Latest news about John Lawton

Since the 8th April when our club mate and friend John Lawton went missing during a mountain marathon in Greece, hundreds of people have spent thousands of hours searching for him.
Hundreds more people have donated time and money to the search effort and today it is with great sadness mixed with relief that those efforts have succeeded and his body has been found.
Our thoughts are now with his wife, children and grandchildren as they come to terms with the news.
We will continue to miss you John and you will forever be a part of this club.

Race Report: Preston Parkrun 11/08/2012

Well, the time had come. This time there would be no escaping it, I would be doing my first Parkrun. On this occasion my hands were tied. I needed to go to the post office in Lancaster and get an international driving license for my upcoming holiday, and Mik was going that way to run a Parkrun in Preston. So the off shoot was, I could run to Lancaster as we were camping for the Cross Bay Challenge, or I could run the Parkrun and get a lift to Lancaster. No choice really, Parkrun all the way. So I had also an unexpected bit of competition, my son George had opted to run the Parkrun as well. Having watched him the day before knock out a 3 mile 19 minute run on the tread-mill I thought I would be lagging much behind him, but more on that later.
