About us

Sandbach Striders was born back in 2003. Since the early days, membership has grown with a firm ethos of the club being not just about running but social activities as well. The club is affiliated to UK AAA and has its own qualified coaches. Many other special events take place on various nights too.

The club meets on Wednesdays at 18:30 and Sundays at 09:00 at Elworth Cricket Club.

Whilst many members compete in races from 5k to Marathons, the emphasis remains purely on keeping people motivated and having fun. Why not scan through our race reports to see what we’ve been up to? Having read them, you’re sure to see why Sandbach Striders has developed the motto of being

"No Ordinary Running Club!"

Congleton Parkrun (5k) – Sat 15th Dec

The inaugural Congleton Parkrun was held on Saturday at Astbury Mere. The course is an accurately measured 5k and consists of three laps of the Mere on a mixture of tarmac and trail paths. The course is quite flat but after the rain in recent days some standing water a mud was present that added to the enjoyment.

There was a good turnout from Sandbach Striders, ten runners in all and one marshal, Jill Jenkins. A total of 91 runners completed what I’m sure will become a popular Saturday morning event.

First Strider to finish with a new PB was Steve Treweeks in 21:47 followed by  Rick Kelso-Davies (22:12), Terry Coppenhall (22:20), Michael Escolme (22:47), Robert Kettle (25:10), Chris Brumby (25:10), Jason Bulley (25:11), David Parr (25:48), Jill Young (26:21) and Evonne Foulkes (no barcode so no time recorded).

North Staffs Christmas Cracker – Sun 16th Dec
Four Striders entered the race this year, staged once again by Staffs Moorlands Athletic Club and now in its 28th year. The race started at Tittesworth Reservoir near Leek, this is a challenging 8-mile multi-terrain run over the Roaches, two miles of which are along the exposed ridge at 1500 feet. The race was made up of a large number of serious fell & club runners, plus a significant number of runners wearing fancy dress costumes that seem to get more elaborate year on year.

RAB National Mini Mountain Marathon – Sun 16th Dec
Each Autumn/Winter Dark & White organize a series of shorter mountain marathons (mini-MM's) in the Peak District - these are up to 4 hour events aimed at testing both competitors legs and brains. Each entrant is supplied at the start with a bagged colour OS map extract over-printed with all the required event information.

The aim of the events is to navigate your way between a series of checkpoints and collect as many points as you can in a specified time period. Armed with your map (and your brain!) it is up to you to decide the optimum route based on your fitness/ability. Each checkpoint has a score, and generally the ones which are further away and more difficult to get to are worth more points.

If you take longer than the allotted time you are penalised some of your hard earned points. Those taking part can either enter as a solo or as a pair in various classes; a wide range of abilities always take part.

Chris Brumby was a lone Strider at this event which started at Edale Village Hall in Hope Valley and had a time limit of 4 hours.

Chris finished in 35th position out of 169 overall and 8th out of 43 in the Male Vets 40-49 category with a time of 3:48:29 and a points total of 300.
