About us

Sandbach Striders was born back in 2003. Since the early days, membership has grown with a firm ethos of the club being not just about running but social activities as well. The club is affiliated to UK AAA and has its own qualified coaches. Many other special events take place on various nights too.

The club meets on Wednesdays at 18:30 and Sundays at 09:00 at Elworth Cricket Club.

Whilst many members compete in races from 5k to Marathons, the emphasis remains purely on keeping people motivated and having fun. Why not scan through our race reports to see what we’ve been up to? Having read them, you’re sure to see why Sandbach Striders has developed the motto of being

"No Ordinary Running Club!"

Race Report: Roseberry Topping 15/12/2013

Hardmoors Roseberry Topping marathon.

The time had come, the time for me to reach my goal of the year and finish the job of running 13 marathons in the year 13. A feat that would mean an awful lot more to me than it would to many of the running buddies I had befriended this year. Mainly because so many of them had run so many more marathons than I had, but, it's about your own personal goals as this report will identify.

Race Report: 01/12/2013 Cheddleton Pudding Run 10k

I blame Liz – you know the sales pitch – “beautiful run on the edge of the Peak District” – “well organised” – “excellent Christmas pudding at the end”.

That’s how Liz, Phil & I came to sign up for the Cheddleton Christmas pudding run.

Race Report: Leeds Abbey Dash 10k 17/11/2013

My daughter Kat and I both ran this race and combined it with a shopping to see friends who live in Yorkshire.

It wasn’t a race that I had planned to do but I was told that it was a flat course and I didn’t want to do another hill after (the ‘sting in the tail’) Congleton half.

Race Report: Flying Fox 10m 03/11/2013

The Flying Fox is a 10 mile race which is undulating to say the least!  For the past few years it has always been a wet and cold miserable day.

Well 3 November was no different with the exception of rain.  I set off from Sandbach and

Race Report: Round Rotherham 50 19/10/2013

Last December, as I rolled over the hill of middle age (50th birthday), I had an idea.

“I’m really not a morning person,” yawned Gordon at 0600.
I had always wanted to run an ultra-marathon and, in my slightly OCD sort of way, a 50 mile ultra at 50 years old would be a nice neat way to solve my dilemma. Remembering, in conversation, that Jason had mentioned the Round Rotherham 50, I applied for leave and booked the event. The scene was set.

Race Report: Wirral Half Marathon 13/10/2013

What ever happened to Sunday morning lie-ins? At this rate I may even make a striders Sunday morning run now that I’m so used to getting up for half marathons.

Birkenhead’s own Brandenburg gate which we ran through.
Anyway, a dark, blustery and showery morning dawned and I piled both a sleepy Gordon and a surprised Tolli into the car and drove to Birkenhead which is not the most pleasant of places.

Race Report: Sandbach Family Fun Run 13/10/2013

The Sandbach 10k fun run started outside the cricket club and was two laps of the cricket pitch

It was a cloudy drizzly day but that did not dampen the fun and determination of all the children lining up at the start with a mix of very small children ranging from 1 year onwards.

Race Report: Tissington Trail Half-marathon 06/10/2013

Having booked myself in for the new Wirral half marathon on 13th October, I wasn’t expecting to do one the week before. However, Gordon decided that when both Heather and Tony were unable to do the trail run, he volunteered us both for it, insisting that it would be easy…it was all down-hill!

So early on Sunday morning, with me behind the wheel,  (well Gordon’s no good before 10am), we drove across to Ashborne with the autumn sun burning through the mist that was settled in the valleys; beautiful. Well I enjoyed it; not sure Gordon was awake.

Race Report: Adidas 24h Thunder Run 27/07/2013

Here is my race report for the Adidas thunder Run, a 24 hour event I ran on the weekend of July 27th/28th this year. My expectations had been tainted by the postponement of it's sister run, the 12 hour Lightning Run earlier in the year but it turned out to be a terrific event and one I would not hesitate to recommend.

Ok, So this must be the most difficult race report that I have had the pleasure of writing, difficult in the sense of placing so much joy and fun in to such a small report.

Race Report: Great North Run

I had entered the Great North Run Half Marathon early in the year not that I had any real desire to run it but I thought I would see what the fuss was about and why 50,000 people run it each year, and to be honest was tired of non-runners asking me if I had ran it.

From a personal point of view I can’t think of anything worse than a commercial large scale road race as it’s not my scene but hey ho before I knew it September was upon me and it was race day.

Race Report: Salford Quays 10k 08/09/2013

I did this race last year and because it is a flat course I thought I would give it another go this year.

I arrived at the Lowry Outlet Mall with plenty of time to park and get to the start line, but shortly after lining up they announced there was a delay – couldn’t quite hear what….  Then after another 20 minutes or so a guy with a megaphone shouted something about ‘trams’ and ‘being stopped’ or something or other.

Run Report: Magic Mile

For the last 3 years the lads at Marathon Talk (a free UK podcast by runners, for runners aimed specifically at those of us who are stupid enough to run marathons), have run a Magic Mile event to try to get runners around the world to train for and aim for their fastest mile.

This year the competition aspect on their website was men Vs women, with points for age graded results coupled with a participation bonus (how many of each 'signed-up' gender actually logged their completed mile) to get the total for each gender.
