About us

Sandbach Striders was born back in 2003. Since the early days, membership has grown with a firm ethos of the club being not just about running but social activities as well. The club is affiliated to UK AAA and has its own qualified coaches. Many other special events take place on various nights too.

The club meets on Wednesdays at 18:30 and Sundays at 09:00 at Elworth Cricket Club.

Whilst many members compete in races from 5k to Marathons, the emphasis remains purely on keeping people motivated and having fun. Why not scan through our race reports to see what we’ve been up to? Having read them, you’re sure to see why Sandbach Striders has developed the motto of being

News from Sandbach Striders 14/07/2014

On Thursday the Wizard 5, a mixed terrain event which started at the National Trust car park in Alderley Edge.

Six Striders took part with club secretary Heather Carter finishing 2nd in her age category.

Striders were represented in no less than five of the free weekly parkruns held every Saturday morning around the country.

The South Manchester parkrun is held in Platts Fields and competitors run past the Gallery of Costume and the scenic lake. Tony Taylor was in action once more and completed the course in 19:26 and finishing in 8th place out of 284 finishers.

In St Albans the Mayell family took a break from a family visit to take in the local parkrun. 3 generations of the same family competed in the event and young Adam Mayell (aged 6) showed the grown-ups how to run a good race knocking over a minute off his previous 5k personal best to finish in 32:16 with Dad Tom, Mum Amy and Granny Angela finishing just behind him.

Closer to home, Michael Escolme bagged his 36th different parkrun course at the Cheadle hulme parkrun finishing in 23:53

Lucy Lee along with her son Nathan took on the challenge of the Delamere parkrun and finished in 42:23 and 42:22 respectively.

Closest to home 8 Striders participated in the Congleton parkrun. Catherine Greaves and Tracey hale both earned themselves a new personal best time, as did Heather Carter who also continued her run of success with a new personal best time. Lou Hayward made her debut parkrun finishing in 28:36.

On Sunday the 36th Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon was held. Faced with the challenge of visiting as many checkpoints as possible within a time limit, runners start in Deepdale and take in both Grizedale and Helvellyn, before dropping down towards the top end of Thirlmere for an overnight camp. They then start again on Sunday with an initial steep climb back out from Thirlmere before returning over the Helvellyn ridge back to the finish:

Jill Young and Elaine Tatham competed in the Harter Fell team event returning a total running time oevr the two days of 15 hours 10 minutes.

Chris Brumby competed in the solo Pillar Class and over the two days ran for 13 hours 27 minutes and finished in 20th place.

Sunday also saw two different triathlons taking place.

Firstly, the Manchester Boundary Breeze Sprint Triathlon which is set in the Cheshire countryside just outside Holmes Chapel and Knutsford.

Heather Carter and Tony Taylor were both back in action in their third event in 4 days, they were joined by Rick Kelso-Davies.

Meanwhile in the heart of the Derbyshire countryside, a brand new event started at one of the country's finest stately homes, Chatsworth House.A river swim in the Derwent starting from the beautiful 18th century bridge out and back in front of the iconic Chatsworth House. The cycle route takes in some of the most beautiful scenes in the Peak District finishing off with a scenic run around the Chatsworth Estate.

Terry Coppenhall finished in 01:48:12 and Cheryl Hutchins shortly behind in 01:50:32. Terry and Cheryl both came 4th in their age categories.
