Thursday 10th may 2012 Mobberley run round the Runway.

The weather for this day did not start good, raining most of the day. The afternoon
brightened up a bit and by teatime the sun came out. The trip to Mobberley was a dry one. Registration was in the Railway pub, but it was a bit of a squeeze. Three runners from Sandbach Striders,  Mik, Terry and Alan C took part.

The race started on a narrow B road, with 246 runners on the start line. The start time was 7:30 pm. A slow start as you expect on a narrow road. Mik got off to a quick pace, he was not hanging about, he was soon out of sight from me and Terry. The race consisted of roads and paths/bridalways.  Did not see any distance markers en-route but the marshals controlled the taffic very well. The rain kept off during race.

After the amount of rain which fell during the day this made the paths very muddy and sticky and trecherous in some parts especially the edge of the runway. The landing lights were quite impressive, worth taking a look at, but on a dry day. The planes were flying over frequently and did not seem to put the runners off. Up to about a third of the way round the route was fairly flat, then a steep descent.

Then along the side of the River Bollin, under the runway followed by a very steep climb.  Most of the runners walked up it. Then we were back on the dry road. I was caught up and overtaken by Terry. The finish line was on a closed road. A drinking station was provided. l would do it again in those muddy conditions, but in fell shoes.

Well done to all who took part.
Alan Campbell.
