This week's news 13/02/2014

A welcome break in the stormy weather on Saturday morning occurred just as runners all of the country were lining up for the free weekly 5k parkruns that happen nationwide.

Our prized local version of the parkrun at Astbury Mere saw nine members of Sandbach Striders taking completing the three laps of the mere.

Steve Farnell was first Strider home in a new personal best time. Meanwhile Helen Culloty narrowly pipped her dad Denis across the finish line and earned herself a new personal best time in doing so. New strider Lindsay Beeston continued his run of good form narrowly missing out on a new best time.

Meanwhile up in Hanley, club chairman Michael Escolme took on the slopes of Hanley park to record a time of 23 minutes exactly.

On Sunday, it was the Southport Mad Dog 10k race. This hugely popular 6.2 mile event along the sea front in the picturesque Lancashire town of Southport challenged its participants with some extremely blustery conditions. Five Striders braved the head winds and recorded the following times:

Karen, Steve, Paul, Dave and Tom at Mad Dog 10k
00:44:54 Paul Barnet
00:48:13 Tom Mayell
00:49:27 Steve Treweeks
00:51:03 David Parr

Karen Lovatt showed the lads how to run a 10k race by knocking oevr 2 minutes off her personal best time.
