It was a week for Welsh hill races this week, with
four different events with over 15,000
feet of ascent between them. There were
also 3 parkruns, a 5 miler in fancy dress and one of the busiest 10k events in
the country.

Racing began on Thursday
this week, with Lou Hayward and Lynsey Astles taking part in a new 5
mile trail race based wholly in Silverdale Country Park, Newcastle. Fancy dress
was encouraged and our ladies didn’t let us down! Lou and Lynsey finished in 52.02 and
52.13 respectively.
Also on Thursday was the Mow Cop Killer Mile, a one-mile
road race from the railway level crossing on the western side of the hill, up
to the castle – in total a 550ft climb! 4 Striders took part in the short but
gruelling run. Results were:

On a muggy Saturday morning 10 Striders headed to the
local free parkrun at Astbury Mere.
Heather Carter came home as first female and Darren Varley as third

Club Chairman Mik Escolme ran his now regular parkrun at
Hanley, finishing in 36.45.

stopped off for a quick run enroute to the South, completing Walsall Arboretum
parkrun in 32.03.
At the other end of the running spectrum, Paul Nicholls ran the Excalibur Trail Marathon,
a tough event that traverses the
spectacular Clwydian Range of North Wales and has over 5,500 feet of steep
ascent. Paul finished in 7.20.

Steve Treweeks ran the Cadair Idris Fell Race, a race
classed as one of Wales’ toughest fell races. It involves constantly changing
surfaces and 3000 feet of climb over 11 miles. Steve finished in approximately
2.07.01.

On Sunday Lou Hayward was back in action at the Snowdonia
Half, set in the beautiful Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, starting and
finishing in the village of Llanrwst and with 2000 feet of climb. Lou finished in approximately 2.33.

Nine Striders headed to Manchester to join in the
thousands that take part in the Manchester Great Run. Full results were:

Four Striders were in action in Triathlons this
weekend. Alice Bober took part in the Nantwich
Sprint triathlon finishing 1st in her age category.

Paul Barnett and Steve Farnell were in Wales for the
Slateman Triathlon which takes place in the heart of the Snowdonia National
Park. Steve finished in 3.51.57 and Paul in 3.21.32.
